Famous American football reporter Grant Wahl died while covering a quarterfinal match between Netherlands and Argentina at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar on Friday evening.
The 48-year-old is said to have collapsed in the press tribune when the match was about to end. Therefore, paramedics were called to assist and performed CPR before they took him on a stretcher.
According to reports, Wahl suffered a heart attack which left many people heartbroken.
“[Wahl] Grant made soccer his life’s work, and we are devastated that he and his brilliant writing will no longer be with us. The entire US Soccer family is heartbroken,” US Soccer said in a statement.
“Fans of soccer and journalism of the highest quality knew we could count on Grant to deliver insightful and entertaining stories about our game.
“It’s major protagonists: teams, players, coaches and that many personalities that make soccer unlike any sport.”
Wahl’s wife Celine Gounder, was in shock after the incident. She took it to social media to share her pain.
“I’m in complete shock,” Gounder twitted.
Wahl made headlines in Qatar last month after he was detained for wearing a rainbow shirt during a match between USA and Wales in support of the LGBTQ in which the country is against it.
Earlier this week, Wahl revealed that he might have bronchitis after visiting a clinic in Qatar.
“My body finally broke down on me. Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you… I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort.
“With some antibiotics and some heavy duty cough syrup, I’m feeling a bit better just a few hours later. But still: No bueno,” Wahl wrote.
