Allan and Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust was set up by their son, John Ferguson, and his wife, Elnora. The Ferguson family is committed to education, world peace, and alleviating people from poverty. And the charitable trust is one of the many ways the family delivers on that commitment.
Previously, the charitable trust was offering grants directly to individual students. But now, it is funding only the charities registered in the UK. These charities then fund the students at various colleges. Since 1997, the Allan and Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust has distributed more than £40 million.
Allan and Nesta Ferguson Scholarships 2022
Allan and Nesta Ferguson scholarships are available for African nationals who want to pursue their education in leading UK universities. They will get a chance to study in the UK and complete their degree programme.
One of the universities offering the Allan and Nesta Ferguson scholarship in the UK to African scholars is the University of London.
For the academic session 2022, the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London is offering scholarships for the following programmes:
MA African Studies
MA International Studies and Diplomacy
The total value of each scholarship is set at £25,000. It will cover the tuition fees and registration fees. If the fees are less than the set value, the scholars will get the remaining amount as a stipend. They can use the stipend to pay for other expenses as per their choice.
Once the scholarship is awarded, the students must take it up in the 2022-23 academic session. It can’t be carried forward to the next year. In case students fail to start their studies or take up the scholarship, it will be cancelled. Shortlisted candidates will get more information regarding the scholarship programme.
Who should apply?
There are specific eligibility criteria that students must meet to be considered for the scholarship programme. Since the number of applicants often outnumber the scholarships available, the university cannot select everyone. It rejects those that do not fulfill all of the criteria. Therefore, always cross-check before applying.
The eligibility requirements for Allan and Nesta Ferguson Scholarships are:
An African national or resident
Successfully cleared an undergrad degree at first-class level
Have received an offer letter from SOAS by the time the selection panel reviews the application
Meet the English language condition mentioned in the offer letter by 1 June 2022 (please arrange a relevant English test and mark yourself eligible at the earliest)
Please note that there are no pre-sessionals that the scholarship programme covers. If there’s a mention of pre-sessionals in the offer letter, get in touch with the SOAS selection committee for clarification.
How do I apply?
If you’re interested in the scholarship programme, consider applying for it. You need to go through a small application process and submit your candidature. SOAS will review all the applications and select the best candidates.
To get started, you need to submit an online application form for admission into the Taught Masters programme. If you’ve already applied, skip this step.
Please check the entry requirements and English language requirements and make sure you meet them. Then complete the online application form. You’d have to create an account and complete your profile.
Next, you’d have to complete the Allan and Nesta Ferguson scholarship application form. Provide your email ID registered with the SOAS, your personal information, university or college education, and application information. Answer all the questions with an asterisk (*) mark.
Towards the end, you’d have to provide information of any other scholarship you’re receiving funds from and write a statement supporting your scholarship application (within 800 words, clarify why you’re the best candidate for the scholarship programme).
Review your application one last time and submit it. You’ll receive a copy of the responses in your email. Successful candidates will get notified by the end of July 2022. If you do not receive any communication by then, consider your application unsuccessful.
