‘Al Ahly Coach Is Much Better Than Mosimane’

Al Ahly board member Khaled Mortagy has insisted that current coach Marcel Koller is “much better than” Pitso Mosimane.

The South African tactician was in charge of the Egyptian giants between October 2020 and June 2022, lifting two CAF Champions League trophies, two CAF Super Cups, one Egyptian Cup and also collected two bronze medals at the FIFA Club World Cup.

He is remembered as one of the greatest coaches in the club’s history, and widely regarded as the best since legendary coach Manuel Jose.

Al Ahly have struggled to repeat the success of the Mosimane years, with his successor Ricardo Soares failing to lift any silverware. However, Swiss-born Marcel Koller seems on track to continue the club’s rich history and add more silverware to the trophy cabinet, having already lifted the Egyptian Super Cup, while also on track to win the Egyptian Premier League.

Koller’s side, though, have somewhat struggled in the CAF Champions League after being trashed 5-2 against Mamelodi Sundowns, while also losing 1-0 at Al Hilal. However, a win in the match day six clash against Hilal would see them book their spot in the quarter-finals.

Mortagy has now insisted that Koller is best coach that club has had since Jose.

“As a fan, I see that Al Ahly has a very good team, and it has the best coach that came to Egypt since Manuel Jose, and his technical staff is exceptional,” he said, as per Kingfut.

“Pitso Mosimane was different, but Koller is much better than him.

“Mosimane achieved titles, but Al Ahly’s performances dropped massively during his last period. There were no adequate training sessions with the South African coach.

“I don’t want to talk more about Mosimane’s negatives. He won us many trophies and we should respect him for that. He is one of the best coaches.

“Koller is a different school in many matters, including thought, and all the managers that took charge of Al Ahly were respectable.

“Marcel Koller among his specialties is to follow up on the youth team and he is focusing on this as we saw players from the youth team who participated with the first team lately.”
