Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has been hailed as a crucial addition to Swallows after keeping two clean sheets in two successive games.
Akpeyi, 36, joined Swallows on a free transfer after the end of their FIFA transfer ban after spending a couple of months training with the squad – as he was a free agent since being released from Kaizer Chiefs at the end of last season.
There were links to TS Galaxy, Sekhukhune United, and outside of the DStv Premiership but the Dube Birds snapped him up and have reaped immediate rewards as he’s conceded just once, in the first three games he’s featured as they look to survive relegation.
“His experience, he’s played in the World Cup, he’s played at AFCON – so we needed that [kind] of experience at the back, we needed someone who guides the guys from the back,” Nyatama said when asked by iDiski Times about the impact of Akpeyi.
“Not to say we weren’t getting much from Thaka [Mbanjwa], he’s been doing well for us, but we needed experience, you must remember Thaka has not played much [in the DStv Premiership], so he came in, Daniel, we had to throw him in the deep end.
“He’s done well for us, keeping the second clean sheet also is good for us while guiding those guys at the back.”
The veteran keeper has racked up 154 appearances in the South African top-flight with 54 clean sheets to his name.
