  • A 64-year-old alleged serial robber was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport after targeting travellers near the R24.
  • The suspect allegedly posed as a police officer and robbed three senior foreign police officials.
  • He faces 42 additional charges, while police continue searching for his accomplices.

A 64-year-old man, dubbed a serial airport robber, was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport over the weekend.

Police also confiscated a vehicle believed to have been used in numerous crimes, most of which took place along the R24 near the Barbara off-ramp leading to the airport.

The breakthrough follows the armed robbery of three high-ranking police officials from another African country.

National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the trio was travelling to the airport in an e-hailing vehicle on Saturday afternoon when they were pulled over by four men driving a silver Suzuki Swift.

“After the e-hailing driver stopped along the R24, the suspects posed as police officers and robbed the general and the two officers of cash, watches and cellphones.

“Within hours, police traced the vehicle and arrested the serial robber,” said Mathe.

Further investigations revealed the suspect has 42 previous cases, including armed robbery and impersonating police officers.

He is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 03 March 2026.

Police are still searching for three other suspects involved in the crime.
