Airlink Faces Possible Action Over Cape Town Flyover

Airlink could face regulatory action, including possible grounding, following its controversial low-altitude flyover of Cape Town Stadium.

The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) is reviewing the airline’s conduct during the 29 August 2026 flypast ahead of the Springboks’ rugby match against the All Blacks.

According to MyBroadband, flight-tracking data suggested one aircraft flew approximately 12.5 to 14 metres above the stadium.

The manoeuvre attracted widespread attention and raised concerns about aviation safety.

Airlink Given Until 15 October

SACAA commissioner Poppy Khoza confirmed on Tuesday, 13 October, that the regulator had completed its compliance verification and provided Airlink with a report.

The airline initially received 15 days to respond but requested another 15 days.

Its response is now due on 15 October 2026.

According to MyBroadband, Khoza warned that the authority would take appropriate action if wrongdoing was established.

She explained that airlines had previously been grounded following regulatory violations.

However, SACAA has not publicly disclosed its findings or announced penalties against Airlink.

SACAA Confirms Flyover Was Approved

In an official statement published on 2 September, SACAA confirmed that Airlink had received approval for the Cape Town flypast.

The regulator said the airline had submitted the required documentation and conducted simulator rehearsals and safety briefings.

Following public concerns, SACAA requested flight recordings and additional information to verify compliance with aviation regulations.

Government news agency SAnews also confirmed that the regulator was reviewing the flight data before reaching a conclusion.

Airlink Defends Safety Measures

In its official statement on 30 August, Airlink maintained that the flyover was carefully planned and performed within approved safety limits.

The airline said both aircraft were operated by experienced crews, with three senior captains assigned to each aircraft.

Airlink also voluntarily provided digital flight recordings to SACAA for independent verification.

In a follow-up statement on 2 September, the airline reiterated that safety remained its priority.

It also withdrew plans for another flypast at FNB Stadium because of unfavourable weather forecasts.

For now, SACAA must consider Airlink’s response before deciding whether enforcement action is justified.

No final regulatory decision has been announced.
