Ahly Rule Out Tau Exit

Mamelodi Sundowns’ pursuit to lure Percy Tau back to Chloorkop from Egyptian giants Al Ahly was over before it started due to the recent history between the two clubs.

Back when Pitso Mosimane was in charge of the African giants, they proposed an offer to sign Gaston Sirino – to which Masandawana never officially responded.

This publication understands the ‘respect’ between the two clubs was somewhat affected – which included some off-the-field incidents in their rivalry in the CAF Champions League.

When Sundowns enquired about the availability of Tau, who’s struggled with fitness since his move to Cairo, Ahly ignored their request.

However, it appears head coach Marcel Koller is keen on offering the Bafana Bafana star a fair chance, and he was included in their squad for the FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco.

On Wednesday, Tau came off the bench in Al Ahly’s 3-0 win over Auckland City and scored his side’s third goal with a composed finish following a nice team move.

Tau’s current deal with the Egyptian giants, who will face Sundowns in the group stage of the CAF Champions League, still runs until June 2024.

This story first appeared in the iDiski Times newspaper, which is freely available at Shoprite stores in Gauteng.
