Ahly Legend Gomaa Brings Up Tau & Pitso After Sundowns Drubbing

Al Ahly legend Wael Gomaa has heavily criticised the Egyptian giants for their display against Mamelodi Sundowns and also brought Percy Tau and Pitso Mosimane into the discussion.

The CAF Champions League record champions were hammered by Rulani Mokwena’s in-form Masandawana side, who beat them 5-2 in front of a packed Loftus Versveld Stadium.

It was only the second in CAFCL history that Al Ahly conceded five goals away from home, with their chances of progressing to the knockout stages now out of their own hands.

After the match Gomaa was leading the analysis of a result that shocked many fans and neutrals in his home country, and he insisted Bafana Bafana winger Tau was the only player who showed some fight.

“We were expecting a better reaction from the players after conceding,” Gomaa told beIN Sports.

“This is the first time I watched Al Ahly losing a game and just wished the referee would blow his whistle to end the game before full-time.

“The only one fighting for the ball was Percy Tau. But there are so many mistakes and the board did not back the manager with enough signings.

“There are players who play every week at this club and don’t deserve their spot because there’s no competition in this team.

“I was once the best defender in Africa and I was always afraid of sitting on the bench for the next game.”

Gomaa also brought Mosimane’s name up, even though he didn’t want to talk much about the South African coach, who lifted back-to-back CAFCL trophies with the Egyptian giants.

“People will bring back the discussion about Mosimane,” he continued.

“I am only talking about football here, but there are other things about him that are beyond the technical aspects of the game and I don’t want to talk about them.

“There are no excuses for such a result. Everyone at this club should be held accountable. There is no fight, no spirit.”

Al Ahly sit in third place on the log with four points and need to beat Coton Sport away from home over the weekend, while also hoping that Sundowns, who are already qualified for the knockout stages will not lose to Al Hilal in Sunday.
