Actress slams mayor, Premier over Joburg water crisis

South African actress and media personality Bridget Masinga has called out authorities over the Joburg water crisis, which has left residents without water for several days.

This comes after Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi announced a R760 million infrastructure upgrade in the city, which has been hard hit by poor service delivery.

CELEB IRATE OVER JOBURG WATER CRISIS

Like many Gauteng residents, Bridget Masinga shared her frustrations about the prolonged water shortage.

Tagging Johannesburg mayor Dadeo Morero and Premier Panyaza Lesufi, she tweeted from her X account: “Day nine zero water. Not a drop. But my rates must be paid in full and on time, right?!?”

Bridget previously took a shot at Lesufi, whose comments about showering in hotel rooms amid the Joburg water crisis prompted him to issue a public apology.

She posted: “Maybe you can sponsor my household a room for a shower at Monty [Monte Casino] since my baby and I have commitments today?

“Whilst you’re at it, she needs water for formula too”.

Bridget, who placed third at Miss South Africa in 2002, is mom to a six-month-old baby girl.

She revealed that her residential area was affected by water contamination after a leak in a sewage pipe.

Her tweet was met with sympathy from Morero, who vowed to assist.

LESUFI PROMISES TO DELIVER

Meanwhile, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has vowed to implement a R760 million water infrastructure upgrade.

Lesufi claimed that the Joburg water crisis occurred after an explosion at a Rand Water plant in January disrupted supply.

Speaking at the State of the Province Address (SOPA) at the Nasrec Expo Centre this week, he said: “The challenge is not water availability. But the interruptions caused by infrastructure failures, leaks and high-demand peaks”.

Lesufi added that the infrastructure would seek an additional supply from the Lesotho Highlands Water Project to strengthen long-term water security.

He added: “Even though we are making good progress, the water challenges in our province need constant monitoring and support”.
