ActionSA, one of South Africa’s biggest opposition parties, celebrated its 5th anniversary on Friday, 29 August 2025.
The green-and-white party was launched during the Covid-19 hard lockdown in 2020 through a live studio broadcast in Auckland Park.
Since its formation, ActionSA has cemented its role in parliament by positioning itself against social ills affecting South Africans.
The party currently governs the City of Tshwane’s municipality and continues to expand its influence.
In its 2021 debut local government elections, ActionSA emerged as the largest new party in the country despite contesting in only 6 of 278 municipalities.
The party went on to secure six seats in the National Assembly during the 2024 national elections, becoming the seventh-largest political party in South Africa.
Over the past five years, ActionSA has taken on key national issues. It litigated against Eskom during the height of load-shedding, winning a ruling that schools, hospitals, and police stations must be exempt from power cuts.
It has also supported forgotten communities, such as the Lily Mine families in Mpumalanga, who have been waiting for justice since the 2016 mining disaster.
In a statement marking the anniversary, ActionSA described the milestone as a testament to its growing impact.
“It is undeniable that ActionSA has already made a considerable impact on the lives of South Africans. We thank the people of our country for their trust and support, and we rededicate ourselves to another 5 years of ACTION that truly puts South Africa first,” the party said.
