RIP: A look at South African celebrities who died from Suicide

It is always sad to hear that we have lost our favourite celebrities. And to hear that they lost their lives through suicide breaks our hearts even further.

Here in South Africa, we have lost quite a number of celebrities to suicide and others who attempted suicide but are fortunately still with us. We cannot fail to celebrate them either way for the impact and the legacy they left behind.

RIKY RICK

Riky Rick, whose real name is Rikhado Muziwendlovu Makhado, was a multi-talented artist known for his work as a rapper, actor, and fashion icon. Tragically, he reportedly took his own life at 34 on February 23rd. The song “Sondela” hitmaker is said to have hanged himself in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Riky Rick was a father of two and had been in a long-term relationship with Bianca Naidoo, whom he referred to as his wife.

In previous interviews, Riky had opened up about his struggles with depression. According to Sunday World, he left behind a note addressed to his children and Bianca.

“I’m sorry for being the one who gives up, but the pain I feel is too much to deal with. The voices in my head have never gone away,” the letter read in part.

Jabulani Tsambo (Hip Hop Pantsula- Riky)

The untimely loss of the rapper known as HHP came as a shock to Mzansi. Despite publicly speaking about his depression on social media, his suspected suicide following previous unsuccessful attempts was a devastating blow. HHP had been battling mental health issues for some time before his passing.

Recently, celebrities paid tribute to the artist on what would have been his birthday. Undoubtedly, HHP will always be remembered as one of the most beloved artists of all time. May he continue to rest in peace.

Patrick Shai

The recent loss of veteran actor Patrick came as a shock to Mzansi. News of his reported suicide has left the nation reeling. Friends and colleagues in the industry have taken to social media to remember and celebrate Patrick for his contributions to the entertainment industry.

In a statement on social media, Patrick’s family requested privacy and time to grieve and come to terms with their loss. The statement read:

“It is with great sadness to I announce the passing of veteran actor Ntate Patrick Shai. He passed away this morning (22nd January 2022).

“We sincerely ask you to give the family to process this painful loss. More details will be shared in due course.”

Anele Tembe

Mzansi was recently rocked by yet another tragic suicide attempt. For a long time, the romance between AKA and Anele Tembe seemed like a fairytale, with many in Mzansi believing in the power of love. When the couple announced their engagement, there was great excitement and anticipation for what promised to be a beautiful wedding.

However, hopes began to fade when it was revealed that the couple was experiencing problems in their relationship. The shocking news that Nellie had jumped out of their hotel room while on vacation together was something that Mzansi was completely unprepared for. In the aftermath of this tragedy, many people pointed fingers at AKA, who was also going through a difficult time.

These stories just got to show that our celebrities are not any different from us. They are human and occasionally weighed down by the burdens of this world that can be too much to handle. And while they chose to end it all, we will continue to remember them and celebrate them for their great works.
