There were chaotic scenes of learners fighting at Alexandra High School on Tuesday, attacking with chairs, tables and even planks.
Several learners were reportedly injured and were taken to a local clinic.
Four boys who allegedly started the fight have been arrested and detained at the Alexandra police station.
In a 22-second video Scrolla.Africa has in its possession, learners are seen beating each other with chairs and planks, stomping on and kicking at each other.
While the beating continued, some learners whistled and cheered at the out-of-control brawl.
School safety activist Vincent Ndima said the chaos erupted at Alexandra High School on Tuesday afternoon when a former learner came to the school with his friends and started a fight.
Ndima said the former learner and his friends gained access to the school by telling the security guard that he was coming to get his results. Upon arrival, all hell broke loose and the young crowd became uncontrollable.
He said the boys are fighting for territory on the streets and that one gang member is a learner at Alexandra High. “They are street gang groups and the unfortunate part is that they took their fight to the school premises,” said Ndima.
A learner who watched from the balcony of the school building described the fight as dangerous and something he had never seen before.
Parents in the community say this behaviour starts at home. They put the blame solely at the door of the children’s upbringing. “Even teachers are afraid of these learners. They can’t say anything,” one parent claimed.
This is not the first time learners from Alexandra High have got into such a dangerous fight. In January 2023, some learners stormed the school kitchen and took food that was supposed to be dished up for everyone.
They ran amok when they realised that the school had prepared phuthu and maas for their lunch.
Reports at the time said they were angry because they didn’t want to eat the food on offer.
In September 2022, learners celebrated Spring Day by throwing chairs at each other and spraying fire extinguishers around the premises.
Identified culprits in this incident were taken to Leeuwkop Prison to show them where they would be locked up if they behaved as they had on Spring Day.
But that seems to have not taught the learners anything as the unfortunate events at the school keep on repeating.
