Inkosi Phumlani Zulu, a traditional leader from Samungu village in Eshowe, is encouraging schoolchildren in his community to focus on education and avoid crime and drugs.

Speaking to students from several schools during a career event organised by the local community at the weekend, Zulu talked about the importance of education.

“You have many rights protected by the constitution, but some kids misuse these rights and get involved in crime. I urge you to focus on your education to improve your life and community.

“I will use my own money to fund sports activities so you can stay away from drugs and crime,” said Zulu.

Sihle Makhoba from the Samungu Ikhayalethu NGO said they organised the event to provide young people with information and discuss opportunities for their future.

“Our area is very remote and has a lot of crime. Many young people here think their only option after matric is to become a security guard. We invited various sectors to show them other career options and how to apply to universities,” said Makhoba.

Several schools, including Gqokinsimbi High, Indluyesiloa High, Nokhalela High, and Inkosi Mthonga High, participated in the event, focusing on students interested in mathematics and engineering.

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, the South African National Energy Development Institute, Richards Bay Minerals, the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation, Sundumbili SAPS, and the uMlalazi District Education Department supported the event.
