Vryheid – The Abaqulusi (Vryheid) local municipality, run by the IFP, has lost R40-million because of cable theft. In a media briefing on Monday, the municipality blamed some of its workers and local scrap dealers for the theft. They also shared their frustrations with the local police, saying they don’t seem to take cable theft seriously, as many cases are dropped without much investigation.
Pietermaritzburg – Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife has not explained why its chief financial officer, Nonhlanhla Khumalo, was suddenly suspended. The organisation told Scrolla.Africa that it was a private matter and would not be shared with the media. On Friday the CEO, Sihle Mkhize, informed staff about Khumalo’s suspension but didn’t give any reasons.
Camperdown – Martin Meyer, the MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure, said that the recent arrest of five men in Pietermaritzburg for activities related to the construction mafia shows progress against these criminal groups. Meyer stressed that they will not negotiate with such criminals.
Durban – The labour union Nehawu is stepping up its legal battle against Bheki Mtolo, the provincial secretary of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal. The union is demanding R2-million in damages and wants Mtolo to pay for the legal costs, which could reach R1.5-million. The union also requires a public apology from Mtolo for blaming its members for poor public services.
Ntuzuma – The township of Ntuzuma, located north of Durban, has been without water for almost three weeks. The eThekwini municipality said on Sunday that the problem is due to Umngeni-Uthukela reducing the water supply because of an algae issue.
