US – Hailey and Justin Bieber have welcomed their first child, a boy named Jack Blues Bieber. Justin announced the news on Instagram on Friday, sharing a photo of the baby’s tiny foot with the caption, “Welcome home.” The name Jack holds special meaning, as it’s the middle name of Justin’s father, Jeremy Bieber. Family members, including Justin’s mom, Pattie Mallette, and Hailey’s dad, Stephen Baldwin, shared their excitement on social media.
Cameroon – Farmers in Pitoa, in the country’s north, are struggling due to a severe drop in rainfall, leading to major crop losses. Maize and millet farmer Dandy Emma has seen a significant drop in his harvest, and cotton farmer Edward Litassou’s crops are being destroyed by caterpillars, putting over 12 hectares at risk. The drought has prompted local Muslims to fast and pray for rain. A weather expert blames the drought on climate change. Cereal prices have spiked, raising concerns about food security in the region, which is crucial for northern Cameroon and neighbouring countries.
Ukraine – A British safety adviser for Reuters, Ryan Evans, was killed in a missile strike on the Hotel Sapphire in Kramatorsk, near the front lines in eastern Ukraine on Saturday. Ukrainian officials reported the strike as a Russian missile attack. Russia has not commented. Two other Reuters employees were injured, one seriously. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shared his condolences and criticised the ongoing Russian attacks.
Iceland – A tourist died, and two others are missing after an ice cave collapsed at the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier in southern Iceland. A group of 25 tourists was inside when a wall of ice gave way. About 200 emergency workers were involved in the rescue operation, but the search was paused due to the dangerous conditions. The tourist was pronounced dead at the scene, and another injured person was flown to a hospital in stable condition. The nationalities of the tourists are still unknown. An investigation is underway.
