Plenty to shout about as Currie Cup hots up

PICK OF THE SPORT: There’s a lot to keep rugby fans glued to their TV sets this weekend as the Currie Cup kicks into high gear, writes Dylan Bettencourt.

There might not be any test rugby this weekend, but the match between the Cheetahs and the Lions in Bloemfontein is guaranteed to provide Currie Cup rugby lovers with a spectacle of great running rugby.

Both teams know only one way of playing the game: side to side and coast to coast.

The Blue Bulls are certainly charging to their best form, and the Griquas will have a hard time stopping the men from Pretoria from scoring anything up to 10 tries.

Amazingly, Western Province has only won two matches in the competition so far, and the Sharks are only slightly better with three wins. Both teams are without their Springbok superstars, but they will be out to put some points on the board. It’s a tough match to call.

The match between the Griffons, this year’s whipping boys of the Currie Cup, and the Pumas will be one-sided. The men from Nelspruit will be looking to gain some much-needed competition points and a big points difference on the scoreboard.

Blue Bulls v Griguas at Loftus Versfeld, Friday 7pm.

Western Prince v Sharks at DHL Stadium, Saturday 3pm.

Cheetahs v Lions at Bloemfontein Stadium, Saturday 5pm.

Cheetahs v Lions at Pelatona Stadium, Welkom, Sunday 3pm.

All matches will be live on channel 211.

➤ The excitement of the Premier League’s return is still fresh as we head into the season’s second week.

Just like last weekend, Manchester United kicks off the action, this time with a trip to Brighton and Hove Albion, which starts at 1.30pm on Saturday.

Tottenham Hotspur will play Everton at 4pm, and both sides are looking for their first wins of the season.

Champions Manchester City look to have an easy fixture against newly promoted Ipswich Town at the same time with a big scoreline expected.

Saturday ends with a clash between Aston Villa and Arsenal at 6.30pm, which could be the clash of the weekend between the sides that both finished inside the top four last season.

Chelsea will take to the field on Sunday at 3pm when they take on Wolves. They hope to overcome their opening-day defeat to Manchester City.

Liverpool will then take on Brentford to round off the weekend at 5.30pm.

All fixtures will be live on DStv channel 203.

➤ It’s been nearly two months since Formula 1 fans have seen Max Verstappen win a race. It feels strange to say, but if there’s ever been a race for the three-time world champion to win, it’s this weekend in the Netherlands.

It’s Max’s home Grand Prix, and with the orange army behind him, he and the Red Bull team will feel confident they can get the job done and return to winning ways.

However, McLaren, Mercedes, and Ferrari will hope to keep Max

from winning and end his three-year-long streak of dominance.

Lights out is set for 3pm on Sunday, live on DStv channel 215.
