Parents at Stanger Manor Primary near Durban are piling pressure on the school and the KZN education department to act against a teacher who allegedly made a racist remark about black parents.
A group of parents picketed outside the school on Thursday but asked not to be photographed because they wanted to protect their kids and avoid victimisation in their workplaces.
They want the school to start an investigation and act harshly against the teacher who allegedly said black parents were “dom” (stupid).
The teacher, whose name is known to Scrolla.Africa, also allegedly told Grade 4 learners that she hates black people.
According to parents, the comment was sparked after black learners repeatedly asked the teacher to allow them to go to the toilet during class on Tuesday.
Some parents said they picketed because they felt the principal was trying to appease them.
“It appears to us that the principal is on the teacher’s side and wants the matter to slide without any action. We will not allow that,” said one parent.
The parents are now planning to lobby the South African Democratic Teachers Union to get the teacher punished.
Scrolla.Africa understands that after the incident was reported, the education department led by MEC Sipho Hlomuka sent an inspector to the school to investigate the matter.
At the time of publication, the department’s spokesperson, Muzi Mahlambi, had not responded to our query about the inspector’s visit.
