One of King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s bodyguards, who was part of the royal VIP protection unit, has reportedly committed suicide after allegedly killing a woman in a hit-and-run accident in Verulam.

The incident happened on Friday when the bodyguard’s vehicle, a black Toyota Fortuner fitted with blue lights, struck and killed Thina Mtshali.

The vehicle was later found damaged and abandoned in a sugarcane field in Verulam.

Philie kaMaNgidi Mtshali, the victim’s sister, said the driver fled the scene, leaving the car and her sister’s body behind.

“He ran away to report the vehicle as stolen and left my sister to die like a dog. He even sent someone later to remove the number plate. They didn’t know that a local security company had already taken pictures of the number,” she said.

The King’s bodyguard then reported the car as stolen at a police station.

“We won’t rest until justice is served. We won’t let the suspect get away with the murder of our sister,” kaMaNgidi Mtshali said.

On Monday morning, it was reported that the bodyguard had taken his own life in Umhlanga, north of Durban.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that the police in Phoenix have opened a culpable homicide case following the incident where a driver failed to stop after hitting a pedestrian on the Phoenix Highway early on Friday, 16 August.

Netshiunda said the victim died at the scene and the vehicle was later found abandoned in a sugarcane field. The man had earlier reported the car as stolen.

Netshiunda said investigations are ongoing to determine who was driving the vehicle at the time of the incident and that a case of vehicle theft is also under investigation.
