The South African Police Service (SAPS) has encouraged women to assume leadership roles in the force as the country celebrates Women’s Month.
Female police officers of various ranks gathered at the Dunnottar Police Station in Ekurhuleni on Friday, dressed in their Sunday best, for high tea.
The aim was to reflect on the legacy of the women of 1956, who fought for gender equality and recognition as leaders in society.
Speaking at the event, Colonel Buyisile Mvelase said it is concerning that 30 years into democracy, there are still only a handful of women occupying leadership positions.
“I believe it is not because there are not enough women who are capable of leading but because they doubt their abilities and don’t have the courage to step up.
“Many women who are capable fear being accountable for the stations and communities they are deployed to.
“The environment can be hostile, especially for black female commanders; we are often met with resistance, but through building positive relationships with those we lead and the community, empowering others, and hard work, the job can be fulfilling,” she said.
Mvelase said women need to start brightening up the corners in the stations they are sent to. Sergeant Media Khosa said women are just as capable of leading as their male counterparts.
“Over the years, we have seen women occupying leadership positions and have challenged the notion that men are better leaders.
“It is now up to experienced and qualified officers to boost their confidence and take up leadership positions.
“I hope that through such events, women will go back empowered with renewed energy to brighten up the corners in their stations and the communities they serve,” she said.
Counsellor Captain Rhulani Mathebula encouraged women to use the free services of counsellors to deal with traumatic experiences.
“Seeking counselling is not a sign of weakness but of caring about your mental health, as you would with other ailments.
“We need mentally fit officers to help fight crime in our communities,” she said.
