The Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party has decided that its members who serve in the National Assembly and provincial legislatures should no longer hold leadership positions within the party.
The Jacob Zuma-led party sent a letter telling these leaders to focus on their official government duties instead of holding party roles.
The letter, dated 14 August 2024, was signed by MK secretary-general.Dr Sifiso Maseko.
In the letter, Maseko explained that Zuma had made it clear in meetings and public talks that MK party members who take on essential government roles must step down from their party positions.
“The party has sent you to parliament as a trusted member. Since you accepted this role, you are officially informed that you no longer hold any leadership position within the party,” Maseko said.
He also wrote that those affected by this decision should not give any orders to lower party structures.
This move comes after eight regions in KwaZulu-Natal, where the party is strongest, complained to Zuma about a lack of leadership since all provincial leaders now serve in the provincial legislature.
They asked for new leaders to be appointed to help them prepare for the 2026 local government elections.
When asked about these changes, party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndlela said some misuse of the party’s official documents has occurred and that no one in the leadership has received the letter formally.
