The Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party is facing accusations from some MK members in the National Assembly who are accusing Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla of using her father’s name to expel people from the organisation.

Some of the members told Scrolla.Africa they don’t believe that the decision to randomly release people from their duties comes from Jacob Zuma himself.

“We are worried about the way things are done in the party and we are now questioning Duduzile’s role in the party. We don’t know her role but we believe that she is using her father to settle scores against certified leaders in the party.

“This is seriously concerning most of us because you find a letter that you have been removed from your duties. The next day you will be told that it was fake news. Then the next day you are fired,” said one of the leaders.

The concerns come after the removal of secretary general Arthur Zwane and his deputy and chief administrator Thulani Shongwe from their respective posts.

Zwane was replaced with Dr Sfiso Maseko while Shongwe was replaced with Thabisile Khumalo.

But MK spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndlela told Scrolla.Africa that in fact those who are complaining are the ones who should be asked about their role in the party.

“You should have asked them the same question on what exactly is their role in Parliament. I don’t know why people always blame one person for the decision of the Umkhonto Wesizwe party,” said Ndlela.

He also clarified that the party is in a financial crisis because it doesn’t have funders.

Ndlela says even the national leadership is relying on parliamentary salaries.

He was responding to a statement that was made by former president Jacob Zuma ahead of the election: that the party leaders would be paid salaries of over a million rand to avoid corruption and the capture of their executive members.

Ndlela said it didn’t happen because MK never won the election; they are not in cabinet and are just playing an oversight role as the opposition.

He said in the provinces the leadership is serving on a voluntary basis.

“For example, the interim leaders in KZN who became members of the legislatures had to relinquish their positions in the party. We then appointed a new interim structure that was not getting paid because the party has no money. The structure is on a voluntary basis,” said Ndlela.
