The ANC leadership in eThekwini and KwaZulu-Natal are at war over plans to disband the country’s largest ANC region.
The eThekwini leaders have rejected the plan by the provincial executive committee (PEC) to dissolve their region because of its poor performance in the May elections.
The PEC has already chosen new leaders to replace chairperson Zandile Gumede and secretary Musa Nciki.
These new leaders are expected to take over from 11 August, pending approval from the national ANC leadership.
A source said: “We are waiting for national approval. Please do not publish the names of the new leaders until it is officially announced.”
However, eThekwini ANC regional spokesperson Mlondolozi Mkhize told Scrolla.Africa:
“We rejected the provincial leadership’s plan to disband us. Even [ANC deputy secretary general] Nomvula Mokonyane said no structure would be disbanded based on election results.”
ANC KZN spokesperson Mafika Mndebele said: “No decision has been made yet. If it happens, it will be announced officially.”
The eThekwini region has had ongoing conflicts with the provincial executive committee, especially after the ANC Women’s League conference a year ago, when Nciki clashed with ANC provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo.
Nciki has also been accused of plotting to remove Mtolo from his position.
