Eleven learners who died in a tragic accident in Carletonville are set to be buried on Thursday.
A joint funeral service will be held at Fochville Secondary School on the West Rand.
The learners are Junior Mankofu, 8, Thato Hlalele, 8, Thandeka Mtyilibe, 9, Khothatso Sesing, 9, Tshiamo Makinta 9, Hloho Hlalele, 10, Olesego Khesa, 12, Katlego Morebudi, 12, Shile Hlalele, 12, Reneilwe Hlalele, 7, and Reabetswe Rabodiba, 7.
Gauteng education department spokesperson Steve Mabona confirmed that Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Matome Chiloane, the Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts and Culture, will attend the mass funeral.
The learners and their driver died on 10 July when the minibus they were travelling in was hit from behind by a bakkie driving at high speed, causing the bus to roll and catch fire.
Seven learners were transported to hospital with serious injuries.
The deceased learners who were burned beyond recognition were identified through DNA testing.
The children were being transported to Blyvooruitsig and Rocklands primary schools in Blyvooruitzicht.
The driver of the bakkie, Gert van Emmenis, was released on R20,000 bail and has been charged with culpable homicide.
He is set to return to the Fochville Magistrate’s Court on 15 October.
