Thabo Mlungu, a 19-year-old from Cape Town, was forced to jump off a bridge by criminals while on his way to the shops.
A video shows Thabo on top of the bridge above the traffic department in Green Point, scared for his life.
He said: “When the two men approached me, I didn’t think I was about to get robbed or forced to jump.”
One of the men pulled out a weapon, and people below the bridge shouted for Thabo to throw his belongings down to them under the bridge. He did, but this angered the criminals, who told him to jump.
“I thought they were joking until they pushed me. I was surprised that I managed to hang on,” Thabo said.
He’s been having nightmares since the incident.
“While I was on the bridge, I thought I was going to die. After I jumped, I couldn’t go up because the criminals were still there,” he said.
“I’m grateful to those who helped me. Without them, I could’ve been dead.”
He said when they put mattresses down for him, he was worried that he wouldn’t land safely.
“I waited for a long time, praying I wouldn’t fall next to the mattresses and get hurt or die,” he said.
His aunt watched the video days later.
“I was afraid to watch it. Our family is forever grateful to those who helped him. It could’ve ended badly.”
