United Kingdom – More than 90 people were arrested after protests turned into riots in several UK towns and cities, including Hull, Liverpool, and Bristol. Protesters threw objects, looted shops, and attacked police. In Liverpool, anti-immigration protesters clashed with counter-protesters, causing injuries to police officers. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper criticised the violence and promised full support to the police.

USA – Alma Cooper, a 22-year-old US Army officer from Michigan, was crowned Miss USA on Sunday. She is the third person to hold the title this year after the resignation of 2023’s winner. Cooper, who has a Master’s in data science from Stanford, won the pageant, which included swimwear and evening gown competitions. Kentucky’s Connor Perry and Oklahoma’s Danika Christopherson were first and second runners-up, respectively. Cooper, an Afro-Latina and daughter of a migrant worker, talked about the importance of doing your best and overcoming difficulties. She was crowned by Savannah Gankiewicz of Hawaii, who took over the title after Utah’s Noelia Voigt resigned in May.

Somalia – A suicide attack by the militant group al-Shabaab at the Beach View Hotel restaurant in Mogadishu, Somalia, on Friday left at least 32 people dead and many injured. According to state media, the attack involved six al-Shabaab members and a suicide bomb targeting Somali officials and officers. Five attackers were killed, and the fate of the sixth is unknown. Survivors described an explosion and smoke, with many people injured or killed. The injured were taken to hospitals, and there was a big response to a call for blood donations. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility. The group, which wants to establish strict Sharia law, is the most active al-Qaeda network globally and was named a terrorist group by the US in 2008 and in 2010 by a UN committee.

Iran – Iran says that Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran by a “short-range projectile” that caused a big explosion outside his guest house. This contradicts earlier information from a source who told CNN that Haniyeh was killed by an explosive device inside the guest house. The assassination has increased tensions. Iran and Hamas blamed Israel for the assassination, which Israel has not confirmed or denied. Iran has promised “blood vengeance” for Haniyeh’s death. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the projectile had a warhead of about seven kilograms. US officials were told by Israel about the operation after the assassination. The IRGC accused the “Zionist regime” and the US government of planning the attack.
