A member of the South African Police Service AmaBerete tactical response team was arrested in Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape after a failed armed robbery.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said the officer, 37, is a member of the Cape Town AmaBerete unit but was stationed in Port St Johns.
“According to reports, the sergeant, who is deployed at Port St Johns, was allegedly involved in an armed robbery and assaulted by the victims at Mthumbane Location, Port St Johns.
“The information reveals that during the robbery, he was overpowered by the victims, and they managed to disarm him. They then alerted the police and handed over the firearm to the officials,” said Mawisa.
She said the officer will appear at the Port St Johns Magistrate’s Court as soon as he recovers from his injuries.
The suspect is charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and robbery.
Provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene said police would not tolerate any criminal activities by one of their own.
“This arrest gives a clear signal that SAPS will not tolerate corruption by members whose mandate is to combat crime and protect all citizens,” she said.
