Eight people were killed in three separate accidents outside Mthatha in less than 24 hours.
The first accident claimed two lives and left three others injured after the driver lost control of the vehicle near Dangwana location, on the R61 road between Mthatha and Port St Johns in the early hours of Saturday.
Just a few hours later, another accident claimed the lives of four people when the driver of the vehicle they were travelling in lost control and overturned on the N2 near Qweqwe, outside Mthatha.
Provincial Transport spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said two men and two women died in the accident.
On Sunday morning, two more were killed in another accident on the N2 road just outside Mthatha near Payne location.
Binqose said in this accident a VW polo collided with a Toyota Quantum.
“Drivers of both vehicles, both male, died on the scene, while one person sustained some injuries and was transported to a hospital in Mthatha,” he said.
Binqose said police have opened culpable homicide dockets for all three accidents.
“The rate with which our people are dying on our roads is of real concern. It’s a reminder to each one of us that road safety is everybody’s responsibility and therefore we all have a role to play. A greater responsibility, of course, lies with those behind the wheel,” Binqose added.
