A terrified Cape Town man jumped from a motorway bridge to escape criminals who wanted to rob him.

Some onlookers suggested he go back up onto the road, but he said the criminals were still there.

He was initially reluctant to jump, but Green Point traffic officers and residents placed about five mattresses on the ground and persuaded him it was safe.

He landed safely to applause and cheers from the small crowd that gathered to watch the unfolding drama.

A bystander said they were relieved that the man’s life was saved.

“What people saw in that video is what we go through in Cape Town all the time. Criminals force you into dangerous situations,” she said.

“Some crime victims have had to jump into drains full of waste; others run on busy roads to escape. I’m glad this incident ended safely,” she said.
