The maidens of the Amazizi tribe in Bergville, KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, have decided to wear their historic traditional attire instead of the usual Zulu style at the upcoming Reed Dance.
Princess Zakhiwozothando Mzizi led the research into their traditional dress, speaking to elders to recreate the unique attire worn by their ancestors.
“I had to modify some parts, like not using feathers in the headgear,” said Princess Zakhiwozothando.
The new outfits look similar to a Japanese kimono.
The Amazizi tribe is related to the Dlaminis, who spread throughout Southern Africa in the 19th century and can now be found in Eswatini, the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and other parts of the country.
The princess is proud of her heritage and wants the younger generation to understand their tribe’s culture.
“As an artist, I am very passionate about my culture. I took the time to research our heritage, including our attire.
“As we prepare for the Reed Dance, we will showcase our heritage as the Amazizi maidens,” she said.
Former president Thabo Mbeki is part of the Amazizi clan.
