Tuesday’s surfing action at the Paris Olympics may have been postponed, but only after a stunning gravity defying image of Gabriel Medina was clicked.

French photographer Jerome Brouillet captured the stunning photo as Brazilian surfer Medina earned the highest single wave score in Olympics history with a 9.9 during the fifth heat of the round of 16.

Brouillet’s camera clicked at the perfect time; capturing the viral photograph just as Medina emerged from the wave, suspended in mid-air, in a moment of celebration that only the Olympics could provide.

It was a quiet day for Team South Africa at the Games with Sarah Baum’s women’s surfing third round heat postponed due to the windy weather in Tahiti.

“From Thursday, the wind will return to the southeast, so the most likely recovery is Thursday,” Pascal Luciani, a member of the organising committee, told AFP.

The surfing can be delayed up until next Monday at the latest.

In other sports, the women’s rugby sevens team beat Fiji 21-15 to claim 11th place while Team SA lost 5-1 to Germany in men’s hockey.

The men’s triathlon featuring Jamie Riddle and Henri Schoeman was postponed to Wednesday.
