The men’s triathlon at the Paris Olympics was supposed to happen on Tuesday but has been delayed because of pollution in the Seine River.
World Triathlon announced that the race will now happen on Wednesday morning.
Organisers hoped the water quality would improve after heavy rains on Friday and Saturday.
While the water quality has improved, it still isn’t safe enough.
“Even though water quality has improved, it is still above the safe limits in some parts of the swim course,” organisers said.
“The health of the athletes is our top priority.”
If the water quality is still bad on Wednesday, the races might be moved to Friday.
If the water is still not safe then, the swim part will be cancelled, and athletes will compete in a duathlon instead.
Paris has spent €1.4-billion (R27.9-billion) to clean the Seine River ahead of the Games.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo even swam in the river earlier this month to show it was safe. But water quality can change, especially after rain, which raises levels of bacteria like E. coli.
