Athlete sacrifices finger to compete in the Olympics

Australian hockey player Matt Dawson decided to have part of his finger amputated so he could compete in the Paris Olympics.

Dawson, 30, injured his finger badly during a training session in Perth two weeks ago when the top of his finger was nearly severed after being hit by a hockey stick.

Doctors told Dawson that it would take four to six months for his finger to heal, which would make him miss the summer games in France. However, they gave him another option: amputate the finger and still be able to compete, Sky News reported.

Dawson, who plays defence for the Australian team, chose to amputate.

Surgeons removed about an inch from the tip of his right-hand ring finger, just below the top knuckle.

Speaking on the Parlez Vous Hockey podcast, Dawson said he discussed it with his wife. She told him not to rush, but he felt competing in the Olympics was worth the sacrifice.

“With all the information I had to make the decision in such a short time, I still decided to go for it. I can still have a pretty good life with a bit less finger,” Dawson said.
