A Grade 12 history teacher from Villa Lisa Secondary School in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, has quit ActionSA after being involved in an event scandal.
On 9 April, the educator, known as “Teacher Maluleka”, and two other teachers allegedly took 65 students to an event that was supposed to be a career expo. The event was addressed by ActionSA president Herman Mashaba.
Maluleka, who was the party’s provincial disability secretary, said the party did not support him when there were attacks against him during the election season.
In an interview with Scrolla.Africa, Maluleka said his involvement in the trip was used against the party because he is a party leader.
“The party didn’t help clear my name and left me to fight for my job alone. I think it’s better to continue the fight without being part of any political party,” he said.
Maluleka explained that the career expo was organised by the University of Pretoria’s Gordon Institute for Business Science and attended by financial institutions and bursary donors.
“This was a chance for students from poor backgrounds to learn about different funding options after they finish school. The event had various political parties, schools, and institutions. I was surprised when it was reported that I took them to an ActionSA event,” he said.
ActionSA regional chairperson Phillip Dolo said the teacher never asked the party for help.
“The teacher works for the Department of Basic Education and follows their rules. If he broke any rules, it’s up to the DBE. We know he resigned from the party, but he didn’t tell us his reasons. It’s a personal matter,” he said.
