The former mayor of eThekwini Municipality, Zandile Gumede, has turned to ancestral intervention as she prepares to go back to court tomorrow to answer to her corruption case.

On Saturday Gumede prepared traditional beer and burnt impepho to call on her ancestors to protect her as she goes back to court.

Gumede’s home in Inanda, north of Durban, was full of neighbours, friends and relatives who came to drink the traditional beer that was made to communicate with ancestors about the case.

The gathering was a sign to help the ancestors understand that her home was full of activity to communicate with them.

On her social media page, she asked the ancestors to protect her and said they are the pillar of her strength, and must not forsake her as she embarks again on this court journey.

Speaking to Scrolla.Africa on Sunday, she confirmed the traditional ceremony for her ancestors to protect her as she goes back to court.

She also touched on the recent claims that the Forfeiture Unit has attached her luxury assets.

“As black people we always communicate with our ancestors.  I did the same on Saturday as I’m preparing to go back to court. This case has emotionally drained me because there are so many things that are happening in a very strange manner.

“Another thing is the claims that my assets were attached by the Forfeiture Unit. Look, I am staying here in Inanda. I don’t have those luxury houses and Lamborghinis that were taken. In fact those assets were taken from one of my co-accused, who is an Indian guy,” said Gumede.

Gumede complained that the case which started in 2019 has caused her to suffer from diabetes. She said it has robbed her of time with her grandchildren.

She said the case has also affected her political career as it led to her being recalled as eThekwini mayor.

She had to step aside as the ANC regional chairperson of eThekwini and was recently removed from the ANC list to go to the KZN Legislature.
