The ANC in Tshwane will table a motion of no confidence against Mayor Cilliers Brink at the council meeting on Thursday.
The ANC wants to regain control of the city after losing power to the DA in 2016. They say Brink is not doing his job well, which affects residents’ services.
On Thursday, Brink announced a new waste management system, which dropped 60% of old contractors who didn’t meet standards.
“We are fixing the system. The new trucks must be less than nine years old, roadworthy, fitted with cameras and compliant,” he said.
Eugene Modise, chairperson of the ANC in Tshwane, worries about how the city is being run and how money is managed.
“As of March 2023, there was R4-billion in under-spending and R10-billion in irregular spending. The city relies on R2.5-billion in grants from the national government for its budget,” Modise said.
The ANC’s concerns include poor service delivery, inconsistent revenue collection, bad audit results and too many staff in the city manager’s office.
DA finance MMC Jacqui Uys said the motion is motivated by ANC leaders’ business interests.
“The city has been fighting corruption that affects service delivery. This is about waste removal contracts that ANC leaders benefit from. Some trucks were from 1978 but were still in use,” she said.
Uys added that the ANC has tried to unseat its multi-party government before and believes this is just another attempt.
