Police have re-arrested one of the men who, according to a witness in the cells, allegedly turned into cats and escaped from Meyerton police holding cells on Tuesday morning.

Scrolla.Africa previously reported on two men who escaped from Meyerton police cells after being arrested for a hijacked truck and possessing suspected stolen goods.

Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza confirmed that the two men, Mustafa Ali and Omari Mustafa, are brothers.

Omari Mustafa has been re-arrested while Mustafa Ali is still on the run, and police are asking the public for help in finding the missing “cat.”

Colonel Kweza also stated that officers on duty during the escape are being investigated.

“The circumstances of the escape will form part of the investigation following an escape from lawful custody. Meyerton police have opened a disciplinary case against members,” said Kweza.

“One suspect has since been re-arrested while the other is still at large.”

The escape happened just after midnight on Tuesday, 16 July.

The police had arrested 11 suspects for hijacking and possession of stolen property, recovering a hijacked truck and its load. The suspects were taken to the Meyerton police holding cells.

A suspect in the cells, Erick Tumbulu, claimed he saw the two men make owl noises, turn into cats, and escape even though the gate was locked.

Kweza said police are appealing to the public to help trace the missing “cat.”

“Anyone who has information on his whereabouts must please contact their local police or the police toll-free number 08600 10111.”

The matter has been reported to SAPS senior management and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate for further investigation.
