A police detective, a nurse, and two other women have been scammed out of millions of rands by three men – a Zambian, a Ugandan, and a Ghanaian.

North West police are asking for the public’s help to find the suspects.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh said the SAPS is investigating four fraud cases.

“One case was opened in Rustenburg in December 2023, two in March 2024 in Tlhabane and Mogwase, and the fourth case was reported in Mmabatho in February 2024,” she said.

In the first case, a 53-year-old police detective met a Ugandan man, Dr Kalvin Sofika, at a shopping complex in Rustenburg.

They started dating, and he convinced her to take out loans and resign from her job. After she resigned and took out loans of R2.9-million, Sofika disappeared.

In the second and third cases, a suspect known as Kareem from Ghana scammed two women in Tlhabane and Mogwase.

In January 2024, Kareem met a 45-year-old woman working at a mine in Rustenburg. He convinced her to resign and take out a loan of R170,000 before disappearing.

The same suspect met a 35-year-old woman in Mogwase and convinced her to lend him R60,000; once again he disappeared.

In the fourth case, a 52-year-old nurse from Mmabatho met a Zambian man, Felix Mugi, in December 2023.

He introduced her to his “spiritually gifted” aunt, who convinced her to take out a R350,000 loan and promised her R3.8-million in return.

Mugi and his “aunt” disappeared after the nurse took out the loan and gave them the money.
