Four wanted cash-in-transit criminals were shot and killed in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday afternoon, with one critically injured suspect arrested and taken to hospital under police guard.

KwaZulu-Natal provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said police blocked the suspects’ vehicle on Moses Kotane Road in Sydenham and told them to stop.

“The driver defied police instructions, and the occupants opened fire on the police as they sped off.

“A shootout ensued, and the suspect’s vehicle crashed into a wall. All four suspects sustained fatal gunshot wounds inside the vehicle. The fifth suspect got out of the moving vehicle and was shot and injured. He was found in possession of a firearm and was arrested,” said Netshiunda.

He said one of the firearms found in the vehicle was a police-issue pistol.

Netshiunda said the suspects were en route to execute a hit on a man and two bodyguards.

The suspects were wanted for several murders, mostly involving people in the construction industry.

The teams involved in the takedown included police officers from the Hawks provincial tracking team, the SAPS anti-gang unit, the provincial tactical response team, the Pietermaritzburg K9 unit, and private security members.
