Nine robbers have been apprehended for reportedly using blue lights to pull over vehicles and then hijack them.

The arrests were made as part of a multi-disciplinary intelligence-driven operation, according to police. Tactical Response Team (TRT) members, K9 unit members, Provincial Serious and Violence Crime Detectives, and private security firms investigated and apprehended a group of suspects reportedly linked to a string of hijacking instances in Gauteng.

They also took two vehicles with tampered engine numbers, a 9mm pistol, an R5 rifle, a gas pistol, one blue light, Metro Police reflector jackets, SAPS protective vests, a siren speaker, a jammer, and cash.

All nine accused are scheduled to appear in front of a Magistrate’s Court soon.

Major General Girly Mbele, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Gauteng, commended the team’s “tenacious” efforts and expressed gratitude to private security companies for always being willing to assist in the fight against crime.
