Hugo Broos breaks silence on Bradley Grobler

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has finally addressed why he has not selected PSL joint top goalscorer Bradley Grobler.

The 37-year-old Sekhukhune Unites striker has been in form this season, netting nine goals across all competitions. Despite his goals, the veteran forward was again overlooked by Broos.

On Tuesday, Mamelodi Sundowns striker Iqraam Rayners was withdrawn from the Bafana squad for medical reasons and Evidence Makgopa was named as his replacement.

Broos was asked why Grobler was not called in place of Rayners but the Bafana boss said he had a huge pool of selection.

“Look, I will not answer any more of those questions,” the Belgian told the media.

“Not because I don’t want it, but every selection, you can mention some players who are not there, and I don’t like to give an explanation every time why they’re not there.

“You know, I have sources. I have to make choices because we have many good players now,” Broos continued.

Broos on why he left out Grobler and Lorch

Another inform attacker who was overlooked is former Orlando Pirates winger Thembinkosi Lorch. The 31-year-old has been impressive since moving to Morocco last year but has yet to receive a call-up.

“I can make two teams, maybe even three teams, so I have to make choices.

“I’m very sorry, but I’m not gonna explain to you every time why Grobler is not there, why the other [Lorch] is not there, no!

“This is a selection and that’s it,” the Bafana coach concluded.

With November friendlies and Afcon coming up in the next two months, it remains to be seen if Broos will select the likes of Grobler and Lorch in his squads.

Do you think Bafana will qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup?
