Woman Sues For R50m After Doctor Amputates Leg Without Her Knowledge

After claiming that her leg was amputated ‘without her permission’ at the Steve Biko Hospital in Pretoria, a woman from Mpumalanga has solicited the support of a top EFF lawyer.

Nontobeko Shongwe told Pretoria News her story earlier this week. The 21-year-old claims to have gone in for normal knee surgery, but when she awakened, her left leg was missing. The incredibly traumatic incident left the young student shell-shocked, and she struggled to finish her studies, and as a result, she missed out on a university spot.

The emergency amputation was blamed on an accidental cut across Shongwe’s veins, but no explanation could possibly comfort someone in her situation: Instead, the youngster is looking to settle the scores.

The EFF’s head of international relations – who has also made a career as a long-serving lawyer – will take up the woman’s case, as revealed by Godrich Gardee this week, and the legal team is pursuing a mega-payout.

Shongwe, Gardee, and the firm believe that a settlement price of R50 million is reasonable. The doctor who performed the operation is accused of ‘gross negligence’ and ‘reckless professional behaviour,’ according to the lawsuit. According to Godrich Gardee Attorneys, the damages are so justifiable.

“In the circumstances of the exposition, it is clear there is an admission by the doctor of gross negligence and reckless medical professional conduct. All of these things considered, we are instructed to demand R50 million in respect of compensation for general and special damages,” Godrich Gardee Attorneys.
