A devastating fire tore through the Zoo Lake Bowls Club in the early hours of Wednesday, 1 October 2025, completely destroying the historic clubhouse.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene around 6AM, but despite their efforts, the building could not be saved.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported and the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

Employees on site were visibly distraught, with many reportedly expressing concern about their future following the tragedy.

News24 reports the business had been preparing to reopen later this year after extensive renovations worth R1.25 million.

Founded in 1934, the Zoo Lake Bowls Club had evolved from a traditional sports facility into a popular hub for live sports screenings, events, meals, and drinks.

It was temporarily closed in 2014, but reopened in 2017 under new management.
