South Africa is mourning the untimely passing of Ambassador Nkosinathi Emmanuel Mthethwa, the country’s top diplomat to the French Republic.

Ambassador Mthethwa, who was appointed to the role in December 2023, had been working to strengthen the bilateral relationship between South Africa and France. His death, which is currently under investigation by French authorities, has been described as a devastating loss to the nation and the diplomatic community.

Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Ronald Lamola said Mthethwa’s passing was not only a national loss, but also one that would be felt deeply within international diplomatic circles.

Mthethwa’s career in public service spanned decades. He served as Minister of Police, Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, and was a member of the Board of Directors for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organising Committee. He also played a significant role in the African National Congress, contributing to its highest decision-making structures.

In a statement, the South African government expressed its deepest condolences to his wife, children, friends, and colleagues, adding that his legacy of patriotism and service would not be forgotten.

“Ambassador Mthethwa was a distinguished servant of the nation whose contribution to public life and diplomacy will continue to inspire us,” the statement read.
