Former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns striker Leonardo Castro has set a new club-record for Greenville Triumph and led the club into the playoffs.
The 34-year-old was part of Chiefs’ clearcut after the 2021/22 campaign and had initially struggled to find a new club, which caused him to return to his home country.
However, after eight months without a club, he joined Greenville Triumph in the US third division in March this year – and he hasn’t looked back since even though he had a little dry spell.
Castro had reached double figures in June and equalled the club record of 12 league goals in a regular season (excluding playoffs) by Jacob Labovitz from 2012 in September.
Last week, Castro netted his 13th’s goal of the League One to break that record in a 2-2 with Red Wolves. The result had also secured Greenville a place in the playoffs, with the club becoming the only club to earn a post-season berth in all five seasons of League One soccer.
Last weekend, Greenville finished the regular campaign with a 1-1 draw with Lexington FC, meaning that Castro’s club remained the fifth seed in the playoffs and will travel to face fourth-seeded Charlotte next weekend in the first round of the playoffs.
