CAF president Patrice Motsepe has explained why Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates won’t be participating in the upcoming African Football League.

Mamelodi Sundowns will be South Africa’s only representative in the mega-money continental club competition.

The eight team tournament gets underway on the 20th of October while the final is scheduled to take place in early November.

The eight clubs that will take part in the inaugural AFL are Al Ahly SC (Egypt), Enyimba FC (Nigeria), Espérance Sportive de Tunis (Tunisia), Mamelodi Sundowns FC (South Africa), Atlético Petróleos de Luanda (Angola), Simba SC (Tanzania), TP Mazembe (DR Congo), and Wydad AC (Morocco).

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates didn’t qualify for AFL

“I want every single zone to have a club in the African Football League, so if I had things the way I wanted them, three clubs in South Africa would’ve qualified; Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.” – Patrice Motsepe said as quoted by IdiskiTimes.

“But because of the inaugural African Football League, based on the performances of those clubs and the rankings they get from CAF, there’s only one that qualified.”

In other news, Orlando Pirates legend Joseph Kamwendo believes he’s ready to coach in South Africa.

The former Buccaneers midfielder, who represented the club between 2007 and 2011, has confirmed his desire to coach in the Premier Soccer League.

Joseph Kamwendo has obtained his necessary coaching licences and is currently coaching back home in the Malawi top flight at Bangwe All Stars.

“Whether it’s as an assistant coach at a Premiership side or I can start as a head coach at a Motsepe Foundation side. I am well qualified to coach there.” Joseph Kamwendo told SoccerLaduma.

“I know and respect the requirements of coaching in South Africa. So I had to prepare myself first before saying I am ready for that.

“Now, I can say ‘I am ready’. I would be very happy if I can be given the chance at my former team Orlando Pirates but I wouldn’t mind coaching any other team.”
