Doctor Reveals Which Bafana Star Impressed Him

Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo has revealed that he felt Khanyisa Mayo was the most impactful player in Bafana’s goalless draw with eSwatini on Friday.

Hugo Broos’ men were frustrated by the world number 144 at a near-empty FNB Stadium on Friday evening, with the Belgian tactician labelling the performance of his team as “a disaster”.

And, while Khumalo largely agreed with the overall poor display, he did point out Mayo as positive spark in his return to Broos’ squad for the first time since November 2022.

“So many chances that were squandered in the second half,” he said on SABC Sport.

“First half, we were attacking on the left hand side and now we changed, second half we were only attacking on the right hand side. As you can see Mthethwa there, building up with Mobbie, good crosses.

“To be precise I thought Mayo had more impact than any other player on the field. Whenever he had the ball you could tell that he really wanted the ball and tried to score.”

Khumalo, though, did admit that Mayo should’ve been more composed when the ball fell to him in the 61st minute but he fired his shot from inside the box over the bar.

“He was supposed to be composed because clearly it’s a good goalscoring opportunity,” he added.

“Again, we try to open up on the left hand side. He should’ve composed himself, relax boy. A little bit of a chip to the far post would’ve probably been better.”

Bafana left South Africa on Saturday morning to travel to Ivory Coast, where they will take on the AFCON hosts in a friendly match on Tuesday.
