Hunt Prioritises PSL Status Over CAFCC

Superport United head coach Gavin Hunt has emphasised that top flight status is more important than competing in the CAF Confederations Cup.

Matsatsantsa booked their place into the CAFCC group stages after defeating Botswana side Gaborone United 4-1 on aggregate. The Tshwane giants are not new into the competition as they’ve once reached the final in 2017 and fished seventh in the domestic league.

Experienced Hunt told the media that keeping the topflight status is more important that competing in CAF competition. The former Bidvest Wits head coach mentioned that they don’t have the ammunition to compete across the continent and still compete domestically.

“You can’t compare us to top sides in the world. The top sides are playing over 60 games in a 10 month period. Yes, I like to play we like to play, you must have the squad. You must be able to get players, obviously we have to go to Africa with the kids, but the most important thing is our league status that’s how I feel. That’s the most important trophy.” Hunt told the media.

“So, we need to protect that, how do we protect that if we flog the team to death, Superport United went into the CAF final four or five years ago, they should’ve got relegated Superport, yes, they got the points from Ajax then they jumped to eighth/ninth and them we 14th/15th they should’ve been relegated. Because they went into the continent, and they got hurt so we must be careful of us going to the continent and play.

“We don’t have the ammunition. In Botswana we played all the kids, we played 1-1. We came here we played a better team and we won. So, we have to do that. We can’t survive not with our team, not good enough to go across the continent. Sundowns can do that maybe Pirates not with us. That’s my opinion, my boss thinks different.”

CAF Confederations Cup draw will be done tomorrow 6th October in Johannesburg.
