Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has insisted that the level of the DStv Premiership, especially of Mamelodi Sundowns’ closest rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, is hurting Masandawana in their strive to win the CAF Champions League.
The Belgian tactician announced his 23-man squad to face Eswatini and Ivory Coast in two friendly games this month, and also discussed a wide range of topics.
He once again reiterated his stance that he feels the level of South African football is not good enough, which is shown by the fact that Sundowns are once again run-away leaders in the league.
“First of all I think we will have the same season as the season before and the season before, Sundowns will be champions,” he said on SABC 1.
“Already now they are 7,8, 10 points ahead and we’ve played eight, nine matches. So they win every game. They didn’t lose one point.
“When I see Chiefs and Pirates who normally has to be the biggest opponent of the team like Sundowns, it’s not what we expect from those teams.
“So yes, the quality of PSL is not increased, it stayed the same. Same thing. Sundowns is dominating and the others are trying to follow, but they can’t follow.
“And this is not good for South African football. And I think that for Sundowns even it is not good. They were in quarter-finals [of the CAF Champions League] three years ago, they were the semi-finalists last year. And I think one of the reasons why they can’t jump to the final is because the the opponents every week, is not strong enough.
“When you see the Champions League in Europe, you see all those big teams from Spain, from England, they are playing the final of Champions League, because why? Every game, every time, every moment they have to go 110% to win the game.
“And I think it’s not good for South African football, but certainly not for Sundowns either.”
