Should Sirino Be Called Up For Bafana? Broos Responds

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has responded to calls for Gaston Sirino to be called up for the South African national team.

Sirino, 32, arrived in South Africa in 2018 from Bolivar under then-head coach Pitso Mosimane and has been in Mzansi for more than five years, and recently received SA citizenship.

With the Uruguayan playmaker not having represented his country at senior international level, there were calls for him to switch his allegiance and be called up by Broos.

But the Belgian tactician has ruled out including the Mamelodi Sundowns player into his selection, although he is not generally against looking at players with two nationalities.

“You know in Cameroon I had a lot of players with two nationalities,” he said on SABC 1.

“For me it’s not important which nationality they are, it’s important that they have the South African nationality and then if it’s a good player, who shouldn’t I take him?

“But for example you talk about Sirino, but you again to a player who is 32. That means in two years he is 34.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea, because you can have him maybe for AFCON and then you to look again for other players who will be as good as he is now in 2026.

“I don’t know, we will see. I rather prefer to look at younger players, so that you have a period of three, four, five years, knowing I can count on him and I don’t have to worry about his age.”

South Africa will face Eswatini and Ivory Coast in the upcoming international break.
