Illegal Miner Fatally Crushed By Heavy Rock In Limpopo

The Police in Apel under Sekhukhune District are investigating an inquest docket, following an incident that occurred on Tuesday, 03 October 2023 at around 09:00 in which an alleged illegal miner was killed when a rock fell on him while mining chrome illegally at Atok, Bogalatladi Village.

According to reports, the police were summoned to the scene after the rock fell on top of the man. Emergency Services arrived and found the male victim severely injured. Unfortunately, he was certified dead on the scene by EMS.

The deceased has been identified as a 39-year-old male originally from Mozambique. His family has been notified, and arrangements are being made for his repatriation.

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, has issued a warning to communities, urging them to desist from participating in illegal mining activities. Not only is illegal mining a serious crime, but it also poses a significant risk to the lives of those involved.

The investigation into the incident is still ongoing, and the police are working diligently to establish the circumstances leading to the rockfall. They will also be focusing their efforts on identifying any individuals or groups involved in illegal mining operations in the area.
